Apisai's creation shines bright
IF you happen to head out towards Nausori anytime soon, keep a lookout for some eye-catching lamps that are on display at a home along the roadside at Laqere. These are kerosene lamps but not the normal ones that you would expect rather these ones are made of PVC pipe and are painted in bright colours. These lamps are displayed at a small stall at a home on the left hand side of the road as you pass the Laqere Bridge on your way to Nausori. There's simply no way you can miss this home and you'll know when you go out that-a-ways. The brains behind the lamps is a former plumber who worked for a number of years for the State. Lepani Waqavakatoga is more than 70 years old and has been making these lamps for the past decade.
After 15 months, still no juice for antique street lights
It was January 2006 when the city of Nacogdoches started installing new antique-style street lamps in the greater downtown area along East Main and West Main streets. That was a year and three months ago — and it doesn't appear that the city is any closer to getting any of the new lights turned on. .
