| Lady of the lamp
She may not have had the powers of the genie in Aladdin's lamp, but the "dancing" lady in Elizabeth Gerner's hanging lamp was certainly magical to Gerner's grandson. When he was 5, the boy would sit mesmerized as oil flowed through thin tubes surrounding the lady in the lamp to give the impression that she was dancing. Gerner's grandson, now 19, may no longer carry a torch for the lady, but the lamp is still a fixture in her Albertson living room. Gerner, 78 and a retired elementary school secretary, recently shed some light on the lamp with Newsday writer Daniel Bubbeo: How did the lady dance? .

Don't wait for a fatality: Crack down on fire safety
When you're trying to sleep, do homework, or just relax, fire alarms become an annoyance. I mean, nothing ever happens, right? So imagine my surprise when I opened my door Monday night and got a face full of smoke. Five minutes later, I was standing outside Rodgers with every other resident there, wondering what had just happened. According to The BG News, what happened was that someone on my floor had put a warm lava lamp in their closet, covering it with clothes to hide it. Apparently, they were concerned they weren't supposed to have the lava lamp in their room, but I was left wondering why it was there in the first place. Didn't students know the dangers of having fire hazards in their rooms? The answers should be yes, but because it's so easy to forget or hide fire hazards, it doesn't matter.
Police investigate baby's death
Cops last night were investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a six-month-old infant. The child was pronounced dead yesterday afternoon by a medical examiner at Peter Lougheed hospital. Insp. Guy Slater said the medical examiner raised questions about the infant's death. "The medical examiner was initially involved at the hospital so we're responding to that initial question to see what else may or may not have happened," said Slater. Police were maintaining a presence at a duplex on Raynard Cres. S.E. beginning at around 3 p.m., although they were not treating the home as a crime scene.
